The situation in the job market is very hot and dynamic today as compared to a few years back. Today it’s the market of a job seeker rather than the employer. With companies having multi-million dollar profit vision, the demand for workforce has drastically increased. In such a situation many companies are willing to offer double the salary, buy off notice periods and provide lucrative joining bonuses.

With such practices being followed employees barely have time to do their homework about companies. Further, many really don’t bother to do the necessary homework before accepting the job offer. It’s either that we are not concerned anymore or the pressure from the employer is so high to join that we tend to ignore this step completely.

This guide has been written to help you understand the importance of doing your homework and how to do it.

Importance of analyzing a job offer before accepting it

You must analyze the job offer before accepting it, because when you accept a job offer and then analyze the pros-cons of the same, there is a high chance that you will not be confident about your decision. I have seen many candidates accepting a job offer and then refusing to join on the date promised. This is either because they have a better offer at hand as compared to the other company or it’s because they did the analysis after accepting the job offer only to find that this job does not suit their career goals.

Following are the 6 things to consider before accepting a job offer:

1. Check the background of the company

This is the most important step that you should follow before you accept the job offer. I would recommend doing a thorough analysis of the company even before you attend the first round of interview. This not only helps you during the interview, but also helps you to seek answers to questions that you might have.

So the question is what all should you consider as a background study?

You should look at the overall company performance and how have they grown. Look at the published figures and stock trends. You should also consider the vision that the company has set for itself and validate to see if their vision matches with your career goals. The best place to start is from their website.

You should also consider their attrition rates. Lot of people leaving the organization within a short period of time is a clear indication that something is wrong somewhere. Attrition rates can be enquired with friends working in the company or by having a powerful network of friends. (Read more on Importance of Career Networking)

The next thing to look at is the culture of the company. This you should try to analyze when you go to a company for your interview. You should see the overall atmosphere of the company. A very subtle observation could be when you see many gloomy faces or people moving around the company without any purpose or no mission in life. You would not like to be part of that company would you?

But, at times it’s difficult to understand a company culture just by visiting it once or twice for an interview. Also, what you see might not be completely true and a possibility exists that you could misinterpret the atmosphere there. So what should you do? This is where speaking with the people of the company becomes important.
