6 Things to consider before accepting a JOB offer

With the job market being so hot and opportunities plenty, do you have the necessary time to review your job offer. Do you consider doing your homework well before you accept a job offer? Many people accept a job offer out of excitement of either the job or the remuneration being offered and then regret making that decision in the first place. 2. Speak with the people of the company

Look at your network of friends and identify people working for that organization. If you don’t have friends working in that company, don’t worry. Visit a social networking site and identify groups created by employees of that company. Read a couple of their discussions and try to understand the tone of their discussions. Read about the talks that they could have about the company or "some people" of that company. This will give you a fair idea about what that company is all about.

If all the above don’t work for you, then the next best thing to do is to interact with the people of the company. You could discuss with the HR people that you want to be 100% sure that you are joining the right organization. Many HR people appreciate this request, because it shows how serious you are with your career. If HR does not help you, then you should try to get hold of some people during their lunch. Many people today wear company tags/badges within and outside of the company premises. This makes it easy to identify the people you should approach. A lot of people today have realized the importance of exercising and therefore go for walks after their meal is over. This could be a good time to discuss your offer at hand and about the company in general. These are the best people to give you insider information about the organization.

3. Validate the job profile against your career goal

During the interview you should ask a lot of questions regarding how the company will help you grow and fulfill your career goals. You should also ask about the career path that you will have if you joined the organization at the role / position that they offer you. If you get to understand that the role / position is the last in the hierarchy of their org chart, then does it make sense to join them. If your career goal was to reach to that level, then it’s a good option for you, but if you aim to go higher than the given position and the company does not have a position higher to the current role they assign you, then you need to think twice before accepting that offer.

4. Read the offer letter over and over again

I know many friends who have accepted the offer without paying much attention to the fine print of the letter. You need to read between the lines and identify any grey areas in your offer letter.

I recommend this approach; once you receive your offer letter, it’s your right not to sign any document of acceptance unless you are convinced about it. You could however sign a copy of that letter stating that “Received on So-And-So date: with remarks stating “Approval subject to reading the letter”.

After you have the letter with you, I recommend that you read it over and over again. Read it 2 – 3 times slowly in the morning and understand what it says and then do the same exercise in the evening. Many a times while reading we miss some key words, reading in the evening will help you identify such omissions.
