You have the power to say 'NO'

The power is in you and only you can say 'NO' for yourself.

Ever been in a situation where you are frustrated over being in a helpless situation where you say 'YES' but you actually wanted to say 'NO'. Do you feel people taking you for granted all the time. I am writing this article in the event of my discussion with a friend who is hassled by his boss with loads of work and impossible expectations.

Generally speaking, we like to please everyone. Reason? It’s probably because we want to be in the good books of all our acquaintances, friends and family. Doing all this we forget that we as humans have our limitations too and hence cannot and should not please everyone. Not only does your health suffer, but also it impacts your performance at work and relationships with friends and family. The other downside of pleasing every one is that people start taking you for granted. Don't you have an individual identity? I am sure you do.

If you ever think that there is something that you cannot do or would not like to do, I recommend that you let the other person know about your feelings rather than silently accepting everything coming your way. If you have great evening plans with your family and your boss comes at the last minute with an urgent work which you think can be pushed off to the next day, then let him know in the most politest manner. Doing this the harsh way will not only put you in a spot with your boss, but will also leave your conscience shaken with feelings of guilt.

You need to decide what's the best for you always. If you think that the dinner is very important to nurture family togetherness and at the same time the work assigned by your boss is equally important, then you need to weigh the importance of both and say 'NO' to either. You could also come up with a solution to head out for dinner that evening and reaching early at office the next day to complete your assignment. This will keep both your boss and your family very happy.
